About Vinton, Texas
Vinton is a village of 2,684 people in El Paso County, on the east bank of the Rio Grande about fifteen miles northwest of downtown El Paso. Native Americans lived here before the Spanish came, and the Spanish made the spot a stop on the Camino Real, the road that ran up the river from El Paso to Santa Fe. Under Spain and Mexico the place was called La Salinera, after the salt cedars that grew thick along the river.
Vinton itself grew up along the Southern Pacific Railroad. A post office opened in 1892, but the town grew slowly, with about twenty-five people here in 1925 and 605 in 1990. Over the next ten years the population tripled, and the 2000 census counted 1,892.
- Cottonwood StationAfter the US-Mexican War brought the area into the United States, the old water stop by the river took the name Cottonwood. It stood in the northern part of present Vinton, 22 miles from El Paso. The San Antonio-San Diego Mail Line used it in 1857, and from 1858 to 1861 the Butterfield Overland Mail kept a stage station here, with Fort Fillmore, in New Mexico, 25 miles up the river.
- Named for John C. VintonJohn C. Vinton was the Southern Pacific surveyor who mapped the railroad's cross-country route through this part of the valley in 1881. The town that grew up on the new line took his name, and it was most likely founded around that time.
- Incorporated as Industry in 1961Border Steel Corporation opened a steel mill here in 1961, and the push to incorporate came from the company. On August 8, 1961, the town became the Village of Industry. The mill is now owned by Arcelor Mittal and is still in operation.
