About Waikiki, Hawaii

Waikiki is a Hawaiian name meaning spouting fresh water. Springs and streams once fed marshes between the shore and the island's interior. Waikiki was the first capital of the Kingdom of Hawaii, from 1795 to 1796. During the 1800s, Hawaiian royals retreated here and rode early longboards.

In the early 1900s, wetlands covered much of Waikiki, and people said they bred disease-carrying mosquitoes. To drain them, a dredging company run by Walter F. Dillingham dug the Ala Wai canal. The work took about seven years, from 1921 to 1928.

  • One of the first beach resortsIn 1893, Greek-American George Lycurgus leased a guest house and renamed it the Sans Souci, French for carefree. It became one of the first beach resorts. Robert Louis Stevenson stayed there later that year, and the area grew popular with mainland tourists.
