About Wasco, California
Wasco is a city of 27,047 people in Kern County, on the floor of the San Joaquin Valley about 24 miles northwest of Bakersfield. The town was first called Dewey, honoring the Spanish American War hero Admiral George Dewey, and a post office named Deweyville opened here in 1899. In 1907 the post office became Wasco, and that same year the American Home Extension Association founded its Fourth Home Extension Colony on the site.
People still disagree about where the name Wasco came from. One story says it was built from the words Western American Sugar Company. The other says a settler who came from Wasco County, Oregon, picked it.
- The rose capitalRose bushes are one of Wasco's main crops. In 2007 the Wasco area grew fifty-five percent of the nation's roses. Two big nurseries shut down in 2010, and by 2011 the town's share had dropped to about forty percent.
- Oil struck in 1938Continental Oil Company found the Wasco Oil Field in April 1938, and oil and gas are still a large part of the local economy. The Semitropic Oil Field lies along State Route 46, about 7 miles west of town.
- The high school auditoriumThe Wasco Union High School Auditorium joined the National Register in 1997. The National Park Service credits it with a central part in the town's buildings and social life from 1929 through 1947.
- Wasco on screenHuell Howser filmed Wasco for Episode 133 of California's Gold in 2007. The Pauly Shore comedy Son in Law shot its opening flyover views over Wasco and its graduation scene at the Wasco High School football stadium.
