About Mexican Colony, California
Mexican Colony is a community in Kern County, 2 miles south of Shafter. Spanish speakers know it as Colonia Mexicana, short for La Colonia Mexicana de Shafter, and the name records the people who made it.
Around 1927, Mexican families who had been forced from their homes elsewhere settled on this land. The colony was founded by Margarita Rodriguez and her husband, a man everyone called Big John. The families who joined them had little in the way of public services, so they built a neighborhood and ways of looking after one another on their own.
- Water first, sewers laterDora Hernandez-Jara, a resident of the colony for more than 75 years, remembers that the neighbors' first project was a water system they set up by themselves. They then spent years pressing Kern County for more, and in the mid-1970s the colony finally got sidewalks and a sewer system.
- A century marked in 2026In January 2026 the South Kern Sol marked 100 years of the colony, telling how its families raised a community with their own hands at a time when few services reached them.
- 283 people in 2020The 2020 census counted 283 people in Mexican Colony, which sits at an elevation of 331 feet on the flat farmland below Shafter.
