About Washougal, Washington
Washougal is a city of 17,039 people in Clark County, on the north bank of the Columbia River. Chinookan-speaking people, called the Watlalas by several sources, came here to catch salmon and dig camas bulbs. Around 1841 Richard Ough, an English sailor who had worked at Fort Vancouver, settled here with his wife Betsy, daughter of the Cascade chief Schluyhus. They became the first settlers on record.
In 1844 David C. Parker built a dock a mile downstream, where an eddy in the river set the rafts of newcomers softly on shore, and he named it Parker's Landing. As Parkersville, it gained a hotel, a bar and a store, but its bid to incorporate failed. Joseph E. C. Durgin then laid out a townsite called Washougal on part of Ough's claim, platted on May 6, 1880, and it soon outgrew Parkersville. The railroad arrived in 1908, and Washougal became a city that November.
“good wintering Place”
- Six days with Lewis and ClarkHeading home in the spring of 1806, the Corps of Discovery camped on a small prairie here for six days, its longest stop anywhere in present-day Washington. Indians had warned the explorers that food was scarce east of the Cascades, so they spent the time hunting and curing meat. Clark called the river the Seal River for the seals he saw in it.
- A first child in 1845The African American pioneer George Bush and his party spent the winter of 1844 here. On April 14, 1845, Michael and Elizabeth Simmons, members of the party, had a son, Christopher Columbus Simmons. No American child had been born north of the Columbia River before him. Most of the group moved on to Tumwater later that year.
- A hotel moved in piecesWhen the new town of Washougal began drawing people away from Parkersville in 1880, the settler Fritz Braun bought a hotel there. He took the building apart and put it back together at Washougal.
- The woolen mill of 1910A woolen mill opened in Washougal in 1910 and was soon taken over by Pendleton Woolen Mills. It stayed the city's largest employer for 100 years.
- The state's oldest grange hallThe Mount Pleasant Grange Hall in Washougal is the oldest grange hall in Washington that has stayed in continuous use.
