About Watertown, Florida
Watertown is a community of 3,018 people in Columbia County, about 2 miles east of Lake City. In 1896 John Paul, a lumberman born in Aberdeen, Scotland, who made his home in La Crosse, Wisconsin, formed the East Coast Lumber Company to manage his large stands of yellow pine and cypress in Florida. The company became one of the biggest timber holders in the state, and by 1903 it was running a large logging operation and mill plant at Watertown.
- Paid in circus animalsA traveling animal circus went broke in St. Augustine owing the East Coast Lumber Company for the lumber in its arena. As first creditor in line, the company seized the animals for the debt. By March 1914 the three Paul brothers owned an East Indian elephant, a camel from the Nile, a Nubian lion, a royal Bengal tiger and a kangaroo that had learned to box its trainer. The American Lumberman ran the story under a Watertown dateline.
- Sawmill, groves and a railroadBy 1914 the Paul brothers' company kept a good-sized sawmill at Watertown. It also held several thousand acres of timberland, along with orange groves, truck farms and its own rail line.
- Growing since 2010The census counted 2,829 people in Watertown in 2010 and 3,018 in 2020.
