About Wells River, Vermont
From the 1902 History of Newbury: "Wells River, the stream, from which the village has its name, was named for one Captain Wells, who visited the locality in 1704."
Wells River sat at the head of navigation on the Connecticut River. Pole-guided canal boats carried lumber and shingles downstream and brought back iron, salt, rum and molasses. The railroad arrived on November 6, 1848, and ended that barge trade.
- The founding of the villageErr Chamberlin bought 500 acres from Governor Benning Wentworth. The village of Wells River grew up on that land. Chamberlin also built the first mills there.
