About Wellsburg, West Virginia

Wellsburg is a city of 2,450 people on the Ohio River, and it is the county seat of Brooke County. In 1772 three brothers, Friend, Israel and Jonathan Cox, staked tomahawk rights claims to 1,200 acres of land here. In March 1788 Charles Prather bought 481 acres from the Cox heirs for $3,000, and the town was laid out in 1790.

In 1791 Prather asked Ohio County to incorporate the new town, and he called it Charlestown after himself. People used that name until 1816, when the town became Wellsburg so it would no longer be mixed up with Charles Town in Jefferson County. Late in 1890 Wellsburg grew again by annexing its neighbors, Midway and Lazearville.

  • Named for Alexander WellsThe name the town took in 1816 honored Alexander Wells, who had married into the Prather family as Charles Prather's son-in-law. Wells is remembered for putting up the first big warehouse for flour in the east.
  • Glassmaking in 1813In 1813, while the town still went by Charlestown, Wellsburg became home to the first glass factory ever built in Western Virginia.
  • The first Grimes GoldenIn 1832 the original Grimes Golden apple tree, the one the whole variety traces back to, was found growing just east of Wellsburg.
  • Two authors of the frontierPatrick Gass, who went west with Lewis and Clark and wrote a memoir of the journey, made his home in Wellsburg and outlived every other man from the expedition, dying in 1870. Joseph Doddridge, who wrote Notes on the Settlement and Indian Wars, lived in Wellsburg as well.
