About Wentworth, North Carolina

Wentworth is a town of 2,662 people and the county seat of Rockingham County. It began in 1787 as Rockingham Courthouse, the oldest settlement in the county, and a post office opened there in November 1794. The General Assembly wanted more people to settle around the courthouse, so in 1798 it chartered the spot as the town of Wentworth.

The town and the county were named for the same man, Charles Watson-Wentworth, the Marquis of Rockingham. He served two terms as prime minister of the United Kingdom, and he spoke up strongly for the American colonies and their independence.

  • Saved from annexationIn the 1990s, neighboring Reidsville, which had tried and failed for more than a century to take the county seat, threatened to annex much of Wentworth. County officials, none of whom lived in Wentworth, would not stand against it, so residents organized on their own and stopped the annexation. In 1998 the General Assembly approved a fix to a lapse in the 1798 charter, and Wentworth remained its own town.
  • Once the smallest county seatBefore the town was revived in 1998, Wentworth was the smallest county seat in North Carolina, a courthouse village of about one hundred people. The reactivated town took in a far larger area than that old village.
  • A museum in the courthouseThe Rockingham County Courthouse in Wentworth now houses the Museum and Archives of Rockingham County, which keeps the county's history in its oldest settlement.
