About West Bradenton, Florida
West Bradenton is a community of 4,247 people in Manatee County, between the city of Bradenton and the Manatee River, an arm of Tampa Bay. In 1868 James Warner, a gun manufacturer from Springfield, Massachusetts, brought his family south in hope of better health and built a house on the river shore. They were one of the earliest families from the North to make a home here after the Civil War, and Warner's Bayou is named for them.
- Palma Sola in 1884James Warner's son, Warburton S. Warner, laid out a town on part of the family homestead in 1884 and called it Palma Sola. He named it for one tall date palm that stood out against the sky on Snead Island, across the river from McNeil Point. Palma Sola is still the name of the community just west of West Bradenton.
- The Rogers CemeteryBeginning in the mid-1800s, African American residents of Manatee County were buried in the Rogers Cemetery on 43rd Street Northwest, next to the Adams Cemetery. The cemetery is named for a couple, Garfield and Minnie L. Rogers. As a leader of the local civil rights movement, Garfield helped found the county's first school for African American students.
