About Samoset, Florida

Samoset is a community of 4,146 people in Manatee County, just south of Bradenton. For a little over two years it was a city of its own. Residents incorporated it in September 1926, when it reported 1,034 people, and the new city took in the earlier subdivisions of Listville, Hill Park and Pinecrest. Their developer, R.R. Rodeman, was elected the first mayor.

Some residents opposed the city from the start. Within days, 20 of them organized to undo the incorporation, but they failed. In August 1927 voters chose S. Ed Curry to replace Rodeman as mayor, and a second push to abolish the town failed in June 1928. That December the opponents finally won, 115 to 31, and Samoset went back to being unincorporated farm country.

  • A name with two storiesFlorida Place Names says the town was probably named for Osamoset, an Algonquin chief, a name thought to mean "he who walks over much." A newspaper of the time gave another answer: the name came from an Atlantic Coast Line Railroad flag stop. The city seal of 1926 showed an Indian head and a palm tree.
  • A brick store in 1925William A. Thomas opened the community's first general store in 1925, in a two-story brick building. Early settlers Thomas, George and Luke Wyatt, along with Eva Felts, persuaded Southern Power Company to run power lines out to the new town.
  • School in the community hallSamoset's school opened in October 1926 inside the community hall. Mrs. Charles Bingham had 30 children in the second and third grades, and Mrs. Gladys La Croix taught 55 more in the primary room. A post office followed in March 1927, with city clerk Joseph E. Bryant as postmaster, and it later got a building of its own. That May, 20 people founded a Missionary Baptist church.
