About Ellenton, Florida

Ellenton is a community of 4,129 people in Manatee County, along the northern bank of the tidal Manatee River. In 1842, as the Second Seminole War was ending, Major Robert Gamble started a sugar plantation on the river. Other planters followed him into the valley, and by 1845 a dozen plantations there were growing sugar for sale in New Orleans.

Gamble built his mansion between 1845 and 1850, mostly from local materials. By 1850 his land covered more than 3,000 acres worked by one hundred enslaved people, and his mill held the finest sugar machinery in the South. That made him Florida's top producer of sugar and molasses, but falling prices and growing debts forced him to give up the plantation in 1858, when two planters from Louisiana bought it.

  • Union raiders in 1864During the Civil War, Union raiders destroyed the Gamble sugar mill, one of the biggest in the South, in 1864. The next spring, in May 1865, Confederate Secretary of State Judah P. Benjamin hid at the mansion while he fled Federal troops after the South's defeat.
  • Named for Ellen PattenAt a public auction in 1873, George Patten purchased the mansion along with roughly 3,000 acres. He and his wife, Mary, named the area Ellenton for his daughter Ellen, and in 1881 the federal government gave Ellenton an official post office.
  • Fuller's earth on the riverIn 1903 the Atlantic Refining Company opened a plant on the Manatee River to refine fuller's earth, a clay used to bleach and absorb oil and fat. With more than 150 workers, it was the company's largest refinery. Fire destroyed it in 1908 and again in 1912, and after a third fire in 1922 it closed for good.
