About Bayshore Gardens, Florida

Bayshore Gardens is a planned community of 19,904 people in Manatee County, on Sarasota Bay's eastern shore, a short way above the Sarasota County line. In 1955 developer Sydney R. Newman and a group of New York investors bought the land west of U.S. 41 for about $2 million. No land deal around here had cost that much since the 1920s. Those 3,200 acres had been tomato fields, and the plan called for homes, schools, churches, stores, a marina and medical offices.

The grand opening came in 1956. Buyers toured four finished model homes and chose from seven designs, among them the Seagrape, the Gladiola and the favorite, the Bird of Paradise. A house and lot cost $8,000 to $15,000, with lower prices offered to veterans. Jennie and Samuel Gibson bought the first home, a Hibiscus model, in July 1956. By April 1958 there were 400 houses, and by 1960 Bayshore Gardens was the largest voting precinct in the county.

  • One architect, 400 homesBradenton architect Sidney Wilkinson designed every one of the 400 houses standing by April 1958, and Richard Morton's Bayshore Gardens Inc. built them. That year other builders were let in. Richmond Homes offered new models named the Windward, the Tarlton, the Expo, the Lenfield, the Cayman and Something Special, while Arrow Home Builders put larger custom homes along the waterfront.
  • Its own Publix in 1959Bayshore Gardens Shopping Center opened in November 1959 with a Publix, a beauty shop, a barbershop, a hardware store, a shoe repair shop and clothing stores. In 1960 the center grew again, adding more stores and a movie theater.
  • A college at homeThe original plan included a junior college. Today the main campus of State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota sits in Bayshore Gardens. On its 100 acres are the Howard Studio Theatre, the Neel Performing Arts Center and the Family Heritage House Museum.
  • Mid-century homes on recordIn 2014 University of Florida students and local residents began cataloging the neighborhood's mid-century modern houses. They hope the state will recognize Bayshore Gardens as Florida's biggest and most important group of homes from that era, and the request is still under review.
