About Whitfield, Florida
Whitfield is a community of 2,989 people in Manatee County, and it grew out of a subdivision called Whitfield Estates. Louis Broughton Whitfield held the development company's interests with D.G. Haley, a lawyer who served as its president. The two partners had the land surveyed, and the plat was recorded on October 9, 1925.
Born in LaGrange, Georgia, Whitfield made his name as an industrialist and financier. Before moving to Sarasota he lived in Montgomery, Alabama, where he founded the Alaga Syrup Company and ran it as president. His family's names went onto the new streets, and Broughton and Pearl still carry them today.
- Bobby Jones at the openingTo draw buyers to the new subdivision, Whitfield asked his good friend Bobby Jones, the famous golfer, to play matches when the Whitfield Estates Country Club opened. Jones also took a job as the club's assistant sales manager. The club is known today as the Sara Bay Country Club.
- Ravellan Gardens, 1926Ralph Twitchell, an architect who became an important figure in Florida's modern architecture, announced his first independent local project here in 1926. He planned twelve houses sharing six garages inside Whitfield Estates and called the complex Ravellan Gardens, but only four of the homes were ever finished.
