About West Miami, Florida
West Miami is a city of 7,233 people in Miami-Dade County, about 6 miles west of downtown Miami. It covers less than three-quarters of a square mile between the Tamiami Trail and Coral Way, with Miami along its north side, Coral Gables to the east and Coral Terrace to the south and west.
West Miami had 700 residents when it was incorporated as a town. It kept growing inside the same small boundaries: the census counted 5,965 people in 2010 and 7,233 in 2020, and 88.54% of them were Hispanic or Latino.
- West Haven or West GateEarly proposals for the city's name included West Haven and West Gate. Neither one was chosen, and the city became West Miami.
- A city commissioner named RubioMarco Rubio, who has served as a U.S. Senator and as U.S. Secretary of State, once held a seat as a West Miami city commissioner.
- Six city parksFor its small size, the city keeps six parks: the West Miami Recreation Center, Central Bark Park, El Paseo Linear Park, Edmund P. Cooper Park, Loraine Park and Garden Club Park.
