About Olympia Heights, Florida
Olympia Heights is a census-designated place of 12,873 people in Miami-Dade County, about 11 miles west-southwest of downtown Miami. Its best-known ground is Tropical Park, where horses raced from December 1931 until January 1972. The old track belonged to South Florida's winter racing circuit, along with Hialeah Park and Gulfstream Park, and the county later turned its grounds into a public park.
- Racing opened in 1931Tropical Park Race Track opened in December 1931. Each year it ran the first meet of the season on the South Florida circuit, during the months when tracks in the North had shut down for winter. The track held its last races in January 1972.
- A public park since 1979Once the racing ended, Miami-Dade County reopened the old track grounds to the public as a park in 1979. The county also placed the Ronald Reagan Equestrian Center there, in honor of the horses that had raced on that ground.
- FIU's home in 1990In the 1990 census, Florida International University sat inside the Olympia Heights census-designated place. By the 2020 census the university was counted in neighboring Westchester.
