About Westwood Lakes, Florida
Westwood Lakes is an unincorporated community of 11,373 people in Miami-Dade County, about 13 miles west of downtown Miami. Its homes went up after World War II, when brothers in the Mackle family made this ground one of the biggest subdivisions their company ever built. Of its 1.8 square miles, 8.14% is water, including Westwood Lake itself.
- Built by the Mackle brothersIn the years after the war, The Mackle Company was Florida's leading builder of new postwar homes. The brothers put up more than 10,000 houses in many subdivisions across Miami-Dade and Broward counties, and Westwood Lakes, in west Miami, was among the largest of them.
- Builders of whole townsThe same brothers later moved beyond subdivisions and, at General Development, started entire communities: Port Charlotte, Port St. Lucie and Port Malabar, which is now Palm Bay.
