About West Milton, Ohio
West Milton is a village in Miami County whose first settlement dates to 1807. Named for English poet John Milton, the community adopted its present name in 1829 and was incorporated around 1834. Its population was 4,697 in the 2020 census.
- A Changing NameA post office named Milton opened in 1824, five years before its name changed to West Milton.
- An Aviation ConnectionIn 1908, local native Charles Furnas worked as a Dayton machinist and performed odd jobs for the Wright brothers.
- An 1880 SnapshotIn 1880, West Milton had 688 residents and stood eight miles southwest of Troy along the D. Ft. W. and C. Railroad.
