About West Park, Florida

West Park is a city of 15,130 people in southeastern Broward County, part of the Miami metropolitan area. Its four neighborhoods, Carver Ranches, Lake Forest, Miami Gardens and Utopia, had no city government of their own until 2004. That year the Florida Legislature approved House Bill 1491, which set an election for November 2, 2004, and residents voted 3,400 to 956 to incorporate.

The new city was created on March 1, 2005, becoming the 31st city in Broward County. On March 8, 2005, voters elected Eric H. Jones Jr. as the first mayor, and he and four commissioners were sworn in on March 10, 2005.

  • A temporary name that stayedMuch of the new city sits just to the west of Pembroke Park, so people called it West Park while residents searched for a permanent name. No other name ever replaced it, and West Park became the city's name for good.
  • Building a city from scratchAfter the 2004 vote, residents chose an interim committee to guide the transition, then met in a series of workshops to decide which city services the new government should offer. In March 2005 voters picked the first city commission, Sharon Fyffe, Felicia M. Brunson, Rita "Peaches" Mack and Thomas W. Dorsett, who served alongside Mayor Eric H. Jones Jr.
  • Playful City USA in 2011In 2011 the national nonprofit KaBOOM! named West Park a Playful City USA community, recognizing the young city's work to give its children more chances to play.
