About Ojus, Florida

Ojus is a community of 19,673 people in Miami-Dade County, on the Oleta River at the Broward County line. In the late nineteenth century, settlers set up farms along the river and grew peas, beans, sugar cane and tomatoes. Seminoles opened a trading post near today's Greynolds Park to do business with them. In 1897 Albert Fitch named the area Ojus, from the Seminole word for "plenty."

Voters first approved a Town of Ojus on April 12, 1926. The state supreme court threw that vote out because the boundaries were drawn wrong, so voters approved the town again on August 31, 1926. The state abolished the town in 1931, but on October 26, 1933, a court undid that because the town still owed money. Voters approved ending the town on August 6, 1935, and this time the state set out a way to pay off the debt. Ojus was dissolved on August 8, 1935.

  • Older than MiamiOjus counts among the oldest settlements in Dade County. Trains reached it before Henry Flagler carried his railroad on to Miami. When a newcomer wrote in to the Miami Herald's Action Line, the column replied that Ojus was already important while Miami was only a wide spot in the road.
  • Rock for the roadsEarly in the twentieth century, people found rock here that was well suited to building roads. Digging it out to build the area's streets and other public works left behind many of the lakes in today's neighborhoods.
  • Greynolds Park, 1936Greynolds Park opened in 1936, built by the Civilian Conservation Corps, one of President Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal programs. Its 110 acres came from A.O. Greynolds, who ran the Ojus Rock Company. He gave the land on the condition that the park bear his name. It later added a golf course and a boathouse, hosted the Grateful Dead and other bands in the 1960s, and was declared a historic site in 1983.
