About Sunny Isles Beach, Florida

Sunny Isles Beach is a city of 22,342 people in Miami-Dade County, on a barrier island with the Atlantic Ocean on one side and the Intracoastal Waterway on the other. In 1920 an investor named Harvey Baker Graves bought 2.26 square miles of land here, planning a resort for tourists, and he promoted it as "Sunny Isles, the America Riviera."

The Haulover bridge was finished in 1925 and opened the area to traffic from Miami Beach. Developers soon arrived and reshaped the shore, cutting canals and inlets to form new islands and peninsulas so that more lots would face Biscayne Bay. Until 1931 the area went by North Miami Beach, and after that by Sunny Isles, and in 1936 Kurtis Froedtert, who had made his fortune in malt in Milwaukee, bought it.

  • Home of Motel RowHomes came slowly, and the first single-family houses rose in Golden Shores in the 1950s. In the 1950s and 1960s more than 30 themed motels opened on Collins Avenue, drawing vacationers from far away. Norman Giller's 1948 design for the Ocean Palm made it the country's first motel with two stories, and the Gingold family owned it for 45 years. Giller also owned The Fountainhead, which he named for Ayn Rand's novel.
  • A pier rebuilt after WilmaThe Sunny Isles Pier went up after Froedtert's purchase and quickly drew crowds. The half-mile pier was named a historic site in 1982, restored, and reopened in 1986. Hurricane Wilma badly damaged it in October 2005, and after eight years of work it opened again on June 15, 2013, as the Newport Fishing Pier.
  • A city since 1997Residents voted in 1997 to form their own municipality, and Sunny Isles took the name Sunny Isles Beach. When real estate boomed in the early 2000s, condominium and hotel towers rose on the beach along Collins Avenue, and most of the motels that once lined the road came down to make room for them. The city now has the 14th tallest skyline in the nation.
  • A school with ocean viewsThe city paid $12.5 million to help the school district buy land for a school of its own. It opened in August 2008 for kindergarten through sixth grade and added seventh and eighth grades over the next two years. The four-story building holds up to 1,600 students. It began as Sunny Isles Beach Community School and now carries the name of Mayor Norman S. Edelcup.
