About West Salem, Wisconsin
West Salem is a village of 5,277 people in La Crosse County, on the La Crosse River. It owes its start to the railroad. The railroad company wanted a bonus before it would put a depot here, so Mr. Leonard deeded it ten acres of land, and the company built its depot and tracks on that ground.
In 1857 Leonard joined M. L. Tourtellotte and Oscar F. Elwell to lay out a village they called Salem. The station was first built for the Milwaukee and La Crosse Railway, a line the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railway later took over. By 1881 West Salem was a stop on that line and on the Chicago & North-Western, with a flouring mill at Neshonoc one mile to the north.
- A name meaning peaceElder Card, a Baptist minister, chose the name Salem, from a word meaning peace in Hebrew and Arabic. Letters kept getting mixed up with another Wisconsin town called Salem, so the village added West to its name.
- County fairs from about 1859Around 1859 the county's agricultural society bought a tract of land at West Salem. It held a fair there every year after that, and by 1881 the fairs were drawing more entries and growing more prosperous each season.
- A high school by 1881In 1881 La Crosse County had seventy-six school districts, and only four had graded schools. West Salem's was one of them, with a high school, four departments and four teachers.
- Hamlin Garland's homeThe writer Hamlin Garland was born in West Salem and later came back to spend his summers here. The Hamlin Garland House joined the National Register in 1971.
