About Westvale, New York

Westvale is a suburban community of 5,090 people in the town of Geddes, Onondaga County, just west of Syracuse. The name probably came into use early in the 20th century for the land west of Wescott Reservoir. Most of that land lay south of West Genesee Street, because the Village of Solvay already held the ground to the north.

The heart of Westvale was farmland kept by the Schuylers, one of New York's major landowning families. A few late 19th century homes still line West Genesee Street, and the first side streets filled with houses in the styles of the 1920s and 1930s. Building sped up after World War II, so most of the neighborhood's houses date from the later part of the century.

  • Parsons DriveThe Parsons branch of the Schuyler family held title to much of Westvale's farmland. Its name lives on in Parsons Drive, a residential boulevard off West Genesee Street with grass down the middle. The family's farmhouse survived the early suburbs but was finally replaced by new homes near the end of the 20th century.
  • A street kept residentialThe Westvale-Avery Club, a men's organization, took up local politics to protect West Genesee Street. Its members' activism kept stores and businesses off the stretch between the Avery Tract and Fairmount, so that part of the road stayed lined with homes.
  • Westhill schools since 1962Westvale children once went to school in the Village of Solvay's district. Cherry Road School taught kindergarten through eighth grade, and its graduates walked to Solvay High School. In 1962 most of Westvale came under the Westhill Central School District, while a smaller part belongs to the West Genesee district.
