About Wheeler, Wisconsin
Wheeler is a village of 326 people in Dunn County, Wisconsin, on the Hay River. The community went by two other names before it became Wheeler: it was first called Lochiel and later Welton. Its present name arrived with a store and a post office, when one of the store's owners became the first postmaster.
- Once called WeltonMaria L. Welton set up a homestead in the area, and the settlement took the name Welton in her honor. That name had replaced Lochiel, the place's earliest name, and Wheeler later replaced Welton.
- A postmaster's own nameA firm called Sherburne and Wheeler built a store in the settlement. H.D. Wheeler, one of its partners, became the first postmaster, and he insisted that the town carry his name. It did, and the village is still called Wheeler.
