About Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin

Whitefish Bay is a village of 14,954 people in Milwaukee County, on the Lake Michigan shore just north of Milwaukee. The Menominee gave up their claims to this land in the Treaty of Washington in 1832, and three years later it became part of the Town of Milwaukee. Its settlers, many of them German immigrants, made their living by farming and fishing.

In the early 1890s families here wanted a school of their own, because the closest one was seven miles away. The Town of Milwaukee refused, so in 1892 residents incorporated as the Village of Whitefish Bay, then the only village in Milwaukee County, and started their own school district. The new board first gathered in a room it rented at Lewis Scheife's grocery, then moved its meetings to the Fleetwood School.

  • Pabst's lakeside resortBrewer Frederick Pabst bought land here in 1889 and built the Pabst Whitefish Bay Resort: a hotel, restaurant, beer garden and bandshell, later joined by a Ferris wheel and carousel. Up to 15,000 people came on a weekend, some by steamboat and some by a steam tram running since 1886, which electric streetcars replaced in 1898. President Theodore Roosevelt visited too. The resort closed in 1914.
  • A brewer's son on the lakeAfter the resort closed, its lakefront ground was divided into seventeen home lots. On one of them, between 1917 and 1919, the Herman Uihlein House went up for a son of the Schlitz brewery's president, and it is now on the National Register. The lakeshore on the village's east side joined the "gold coast" that grew up north of Milwaukee, home to many of the city's richest families.
  • From 512 people to 18,390Streetcars turned the village into a commuter suburb, and it grew from 512 people in 1900 to 9,651 in 1940 as developers laid out new subdivisions. Growth went on after World War II until the village peaked at 18,390 people in 1960. Since then the count has slowly eased, to 14,954 in 2020.
  • Top high school in 2024The school district the village fought for in 1892 now runs four public schools. In 2024 U.S. News & World Report ranked Whitefish Bay High School first in Milwaukee and first in Wisconsin, and 164th in the nation.
