About Wiggins, Mississippi

Wiggins is a city of 4,272 people and the county seat of Stone County, in South Mississippi near the Gulf Coast. It takes its name from Wiggins Hatten, whose son Madison Hatten was among the first homesteaders here. The town was incorporated in 1904 and grew quickly with the timber boom of the early 1900s, and the 1910 census counted 980 residents. The Finkbine Lumber Company once kept its headquarters in Wiggins.

On January 21, 1910, between 11 am and 1 pm, a fire of unknown cause broke out in the Hammock Building, a lodging house, and strong northwest winds pushed it through more than half of the business district. The town had no fire department and no waterworks, so residents fought back with bucket brigades and dynamite and held the flames east of the Gulf and Ship Island Railroad. By the end, 41 businesses were lost, the railroad depot among them, but only two or three homes burned because most houses stood away from downtown.

  • Pine Hill rose from the ashesAfter the 1910 fire, a new downtown grew up on both sides of Pine Avenue, a one-block slope running east from Highway 49 and Railroad Street. Its brick shops, built side by side, held drug stores, a movie theater, 5 & dime stores, barber shops, cafes, the county library and the post office. Pine Hill stayed the center of trade until the late 1960s, when U.S. Route 49 bypassed downtown and many businesses moved elsewhere in Wiggins.
  • The Pine Hill FestivalWiggins High School and its elementary school once stood at the foot of Pine Hill. Both were razed in the 1970s, and Blaylock Park took their place. In the 1980s, business leaders from the city and county launched Pine Hill Day to lift community spirit and draw visitors, offering local crafts, farm produce and home cooking.
  • Pickles and pineWiggins has long been known for its pickles, and the town once claimed the largest pickle processing plant in the world. That plant has since closed. Timber has also slipped from its boom years, but it still keeps many Wiggins businesses going.
  • First Black mayor in 2021Darrell Berry served 12 years as an elected Wiggins alderman, across three mayoral terms. He became mayor pro tem in November 2020, then interim mayor in January 2021 after the sitting mayor died. In June 2021 voters elected him the city's first African-American mayor, and three African Americans served on the city council at the same time.
