About Wildwood, Florida

Wildwood is a city of 15,730 people in Sumter County, Florida. It took its name from its isolated spot in the woods, and a post office under the Wildwood name has served the town since 1881. The historic community of Orange Home also lies within the city limits.

The Seaboard Air Line Railroad made Wildwood a division point with a rail yard, and the Seaboard Coast Line and Seaboard System railroads kept that role after it. Trains carrying passengers out of New York City and the Midwest were divided and rejoined here to reach St. Petersburg and Miami, a job the yard did until the 1990s. CSX Transportation, which succeeded the Seaboard, still runs Wildwood Yard today.

  • The Crossroads of FloridaFour major highways come together at Wildwood: U.S. Route 301, State Road 44, Florida's Turnpike and Interstate 75. Because the city sits in the middle of the state, with fast routes to both coasts, people came to call it "the Crossroads of Florida." For many years turnpike road signs named Wildwood as the northern city, until Ocala replaced it starting in 2007.
  • Saying no to The VillagesIn April 2015, The Villages asked Wildwood to approve a plan for 785 homes along County Road 466A, facing Pinellas Plaza. City leaders rejected it because they feared Wildwood would lose its identity if The Villages overwhelmed it. On April 27, 2015, The Villages withdrew its plans, saying the city's officials had asked for too much.
  • Amtrak until 2004Amtrak's Palmetto stopped at Wildwood station on its run between New York City and Tampa until 2004. The station now serves as a CSX maintenance yard. Travelers can still catch an Amtrak Thruway bus here, running between Jacksonville and Dade City and timed to meet the Silver Star train in Jacksonville.
