About Willow River, Minnesota

Willow River stands where the Willow and Kettle rivers meet. An Ojibwe encampment preceded the coach stop, railroad facilities and lumber mill that shaped the Pine County community during the nineteenth century.

  • A coach changing stationThe 1850 military road between St. Paul and Duluth used Willow River to change horses.
  • Fox-Wisdom sawmillThe mill opened in March 1890 and employed about 125 people at its peak.
