About Windsor, Vermont
Windsor is a town of 3,559 people in Windsor County, on the Connecticut River below Mount Ascutney. Governor Benning Wentworth chartered it on July 6, 1761, as one of the New Hampshire grants, and it took its name from Windsor, Connecticut. Captain Steele Smith and his family came up from Farmington, Connecticut, in August 1764 and became its first settlers.
In 1777 delegates met in a Windsor tavern and adopted a constitution that declared Vermont independent of Great Britain, which founded the Vermont Republic. The republic governed itself until Vermont entered the Union in 1791, and Windsor served as its first capital until Montpelier took over in 1805. By 1820 Windsor had grown into the largest town in the state, a busy center of farming and trade.
- The Old Constitution HouseThe men who signed Vermont's 1777 constitution gathered in a tavern that still stands today as the Old Constitution House. That meeting is the reason Windsor is known as the Birthplace of Vermont.
- Mill Brook's first damWindsor built its first dam across Mill Brook in 1835. The water power it supplied ran local factories, and they turned out guns, machinery, tinware, furniture and harnesses.
- Interchangeable parts from 1846Robbins and Lawrence won a government contract in 1846 to make firearms. They built them with advanced machine tools that made interchangeable parts, and with their partners they went on to open factories along the Connecticut River valley and across New England. Later two big plants carried Windsor's economy, a Goodyear Tire and Rubber factory and the Cone Automatic Machine works, and both have since closed.
- First to break ground for railNo other Vermont town broke ground for the railroad before Windsor, which built a depot in the mid-19th century. Windsor Station linked the town's goods to markets outside the state, and once the trains came through, tourists began to discover the area.
- Moon Dance since 1999Every autumn since 1999, Windsor has filled its streets for the Moon Dance festival, with live bands, magicians and hypnotists.
