About Weathersfield, Vermont, Drawn Like an Old Atlas

In 1811, William Jarvis brought Merino sheep from Spain to his Weathersfield Bow farm. They were the first Merino sheep in America. Jarvis had served as U.S. Consul General to Portugal under Thomas Jefferson. He sent eight of his 4,000 sheep as gifts to Jefferson and James Madison. His flocks shaped Vermont farming for a century.

  • Name originWeathersfield took its name from Wethersfield, Connecticut, where some of its earliest settlers had lived. That Connecticut town was itself named for a village in Essex, England.
