About Springfield, Vermont

Springfield is a town of 9,062 people in Windsor County, where the Black River runs through a narrow valley downtown before it meets the Connecticut River at the town's eastern edge. Governor Benning Wentworth chartered it as a New Hampshire grant on August 20, 1761, naming Gideon Lyman and 61 others as grantees, and New York confirmed the charter in 1772. Settlers came in earnest only after the French and Indian War ended and the Crown Point Road opened.

The river's falls lose 110 feet in just an eighth of a mile, and the town's first sawmill rose beside them. A bridge crossed the river in the 1770s, and the town center grew up around it and the mills. The flats along the river made fine farmland, but the water power turned Springfield into a mill town, and in 1888 James Hartness brought the Jones and Lamson Machine Company here from Windsor. Other precision shops followed, and Springfield became the heart of Vermont's Precision Valley.

  • Hartness and the turret latheIn Springfield, James Hartness built his flat-turret lathe at Jones and Lamson, and in 1896 Edwin R. Fellows, whom he mentored, designed a new gear shaper and co-founded the Fellows Gear Shaper Company. Hartness was also one of the country's earliest fliers. He donated ground for the Springfield Aerodrome, the first airfield in Vermont, and served as governor from 1921 to 1923.
  • Seventh on the bombing listSpringfield's machine tools were so vital in World War II that the federal government placed the town and the Cone Automatic Machine Company of nearby Windsor seventh among the country's most important bombing targets. In 1942 the Southview houses went up on Stanley Road for the workers turning out war materials.
  • Stellafane on Breezy HillMembers built their pink clubhouse, Stellafane, in 1923, and their convention has met there nearly every summer since 1926. It became a National Historic Landmark in 1989.
  • A teacher's cry of EurekaDavid Searle, the first teacher at the schoolhouse on Charlestown Road, is said to have shouted "Eureka!" when he finally reached the settlement, and the school took the name. Finished in 1790, it is the oldest one-room school in Vermont. Classes ended in 1900, the building was taken apart and stored in 1958, and the Vermont Board of Historic Sites put it back together in 1968. The word still appears on Springfield streets and businesses.
  • The Simpsons came to townOn July 10, 2007, Springfield won a Fox contest against more than a dozen other towns of the same name across the country and hosted the premiere of The Simpsons Movie.
