About Winnie, Texas
Winnie is a community of 3,162 people in Chambers County, Texas. It grew up along the Gulf and Interstate Railway and takes its name from Fox Winnie, a contractor who worked on that line. Once the tracks were finished, E. Dee Normandie and L. P. Featherstone, the railroad's president and secretary, filed the town plat in 1895, and Winnie gained a post office that same year.
The Winnie and Loan Improvement Company tried to sell the new town's land in small lots, but few buyers came, and the company was dissolved in 1911. Schooling grew more organized in 1931, when the area's schools were joined into a single district, the East Chambers County Consolidated School District.
- Figs in the early 1900sFig orchards thrived around Winnie and Stowell in the first years of the 1900s, and several plants went up nearby to process the fruit. The business did not last, and by about 1920 the local fig industry had faded away.
- Oil and gas from 1941In 1941 the Stowell oilfield was found north and east of Winnie. Oilman Glenn H. McCarthy developed the fields around town and built a large gas plant just east of it. That work, along with the building of Interstate 10, brought more people to Winnie.
- Texas Rice Festival since 1970Winnie and neighboring Stowell have hosted the Texas Rice Festival together since 1970. It honors the farmers of Southeast Texas on the first weekend of October, with live bands, singers and a beauty pageant, and it opens on the Wednesday before with a cook-off.
- A 2,000-foot towerThe Winnie Cumulus Broadcasting Tower is a guyed TV mast that rises 2,000 feet, which makes it one of the tallest structures in the world.
