About Winsted, Connecticut
Winsted is a city of 7,192 people in Litchfield County, and it makes up most of the town of Winchester. Settlers arrived in 1750 where the Mad River joins the Still River, and the water power made Winsted one of Connecticut's earliest mill towns. Its first product was scythes, made by the Winsted Manufacturing Company from 1792. The name joins Winchester, the parent town, with neighboring Barkhamsted.
Clocks became the town's biggest business. In 1840 William L. Gilbert moved to Winsted, where he took charge of a small clock factory built around 1825. His company grew into one of the country's largest clockmakers, and before the Panic of 1907 it had some 500 workers turning out 2,000 clocks a day. In 1955 Hurricanes Connie and Diane struck within one week, and the Mad River ran up to 10 feet deep through downtown. Every building between Main Street and the river was later torn down, Main Street was widened to four lanes, and flood damage helped finish off the struggling clock company, which closed in 1964.
- A hotel named by voteIn 1898 a large brick hotel took the place of the old wooden one downtown. To choose its name, the Winsted Evening Citizen asked the whole community to vote in a contest. The Winchester Hotel won with more than 4,000 votes, even though the community had turned down that same name when it formed its borough.
- Gilbert's gifts to the townWilliam L. Gilbert's will left more than $600,000 to build and endow a public high school, and in his lifetime he paid for most of Winsted's water system. The Gilbert School still serves as the town's public high school. Its original building became home to Northwestern Connecticut Community College, which Winsted residents, among them Ralph Nader's older brother Shafeek, founded in 1965 as one of the state's first four community colleges.
- The Castle Tower of 1890Five stone churches stand in a crescent from east to west across Winsted, and in their exact center rises the Castle Tower, a stone Civil War monument over 40 feet tall that was put up in 1890.
- From hosiery to artistsIn the 1800s Winsted Hosiery was the largest hosiery maker in Connecticut. After its renovation in 2004 the old mill, now called Whiting Mills, filled with 56 artisans, small businesses and shops, and Yankee Magazine named it the 2016 Best Artists' Community in Connecticut.
- A mural and a museumIn 1938 the muralist Amy Jones painted Lincoln's Arbiter Settles the Winsted Post Office Controversy for the town's post office. In 2015 the American Museum of Tort Law, started by Ralph Nader, opened at 654 Main Street, in what had been the Winsted Savings Bank building.
