About Wolf Creek, Montana

Wolf Creek is a small unincorporated town in Montana's Lewis and Clark County, and the 2020 census counted 25 people here. In 1864 the U.S. Congress granted this land to the Northern Pacific Railroad, and the Wolf Creek Townsite Company later laid out the town on part of that grant.

The town grew because of the railroad. In 1887 the Montana Central Railway pushed its tracks through the tight Prickly Pear Canyon, and Wolf Creek, which took its name from the creek, sprang up to serve the line. Much later, Interstate 15 was built straight through the middle of town, cutting it in two and almost wiping it out.

“According to local history, the name Wolf Creek derives from the Indian name, Creek Where the Wolf Jumped To (or Creek That the Wolf Jumped In).”
National Register nomination, 1997
  • Over the North HillsTravelers heading north out of Helena crossed the North Hills and reached Wolf Creek before any other town. Today it sits 28 miles north of the state capital along Interstate 15.
  • Home base for dam buildersFrom 1908 to 1910, crews built the Holter Dam nearby, and Wolf Creek gave those workers a place to stay and buy what they needed while the job went on.
  • A Hollywood hometownIn the film A River Runs Through It, Wolf Creek is where Jessie Burns lives, the young woman Norman Maclean falls for. Real cameras came here too, when parts of Thunderbolt and Lightfoot were filmed in Wolf Creek.
  • The Marlboro ManIn the 1970s, Marlboro picked a local man, Herf Ingersoll, to be its Marlboro Man.
