About Wolverine Lake, Michigan

Wolverine Lake is a village of 4,544 people in Oakland County, and it sits within Commerce Township. The lake at its center did not form on its own. Local backers dammed small streams in the early 1920s to create it, and a community soon grew up along its shores. That community took the lake's name in 1923 and incorporated as a village in 1954.

  • A lake made by a dentistBefore 1918, Howard Stuart, a local dentist and developer, and L. A. Green came up with a plan to dam several small streams and flood the land into one bigger lake. Stuart paid for the damming and flooding himself, and the project was finished in March 1923.
  • Named for the wolverineBy the end of 1923, the new community around the lake had petitioned to be called Wolverine Lake. The name honors the wolverine, Michigan's state animal.
  • A quarter of it is waterThe village covers 1.68 square miles, and 0.42 square miles of that is water, about 25.0% of its area.
