About Yale, Kansas

Yale is a community of 81 people in Crawford County, about a mile west of the Missouri line and northeast of Frontenac. The Western Coal and Mining Company founded it as a mining town on the Missouri Pacific Railroad, and from 1890 to 1930 it was mainly an African American mining camp.

During the Big Four Strikes of 1893 and 1899, the company brought Black miners from Alabama by rail to work the mines. In 1893, 375 of them settled at Yale, and the first group in 1899 numbered 175. Angry white strikers met that second wave, so the newcomers were taken into a stockade for protection. The strike ended in September 1899, and the coal companies kept recruiting African American miners after it was over.

  • A post office from 1892Yale opened a post office in 1892, and it ran until 1914. By 1900 the camp had grown into a town with stores, schools, churches, a doctor and homes for miners and their families, though newly arrived miners had to board in an old skating rink.
  • A band for RooseveltIn 1900 a band of Black musicians from Yale played to greet Theodore Roosevelt when he arrived in Pittsburg.
  • The Yale cemeteryAn estimated 248 people lie in what is now called the Yale African American Cemetery, north of Mindenmines in Barton County, Missouri. As anti-Black violence grew in the region, most of Yale's Black residents were driven from their homes by the early 1930s, and many moved north to Kansas City.
  • Chicken Mary's and Chicken Annie'sTwo sisters opened chicken restaurants in Yale in the 1930s and 1940s, and Chicken Mary's and Chicken Annie's are still serving today. The town's public school closed in 1947, and apart from the restaurants, only some homes and farms remain.
