About Yalecrest, Utah
Yalecrest grew because of smoke. Coal furnaces filled Salt Lake City's winter air with soot. Developers bought land on the east bench and advertised its clean air above the haze. The first Yalecrest home went up in 1912. Several streets carry the names of Ivy League schools, so locals call it the Harvard-Yale area.
Before the houses came, Yalecrest was farmland handed out by lot by LDS church leaders. Gutliffe Beck built an adobe farmstead there in the early 1870s, later used as a dairy. Paul Schettler's farm nearby raised silk worms in mulberry orchards.
