Geography Worth Displaying
This map was created using accurate cartographic data and authoritative geographic sources, including the U.S. Geological Survey and the Census Bureau. About Yoder, Kansas
The town was named for Eli Yoder, one of its original settlers. He opened a store here in 1889 and became the first postmaster. The Amish families of the area descended from Pennsylvania Dutch farmers. They moved to Reno County in 1883 and 1884.
The Amish of Yoder held to their old customs in 1939. Cars were banned, so families drove to town in buggies drawn by well-groomed horses. In 1937, a number of Amish families left for Fairbanks, Iowa. Oil development had been closing in on their seclusion.
