About Yorktown, Virginia
The United States government built the Yorktown monument to mark the surrender of Cornwallis. It was completed in August 1884 and stands 97 feet tall. A woman with arms outstretched, the Goddess of Peace, crowns the top. Female figures around it stand for the thirteen original colonies.
Thomas Nelson, known as Scotch Tom, built a brick house about 1725 for his youngest son. The son, Secretary Thomas Nelson, was inside when the siege of York began in October 1781. The house stood near the lines and was bombarded so heavily that it was never repaired. During the shelling, his butler was killed while serving dinner.
