About Gloucester Point, Virginia

Gloucester Point is a community of 10,587 people in Gloucester County, on the York River's north shore across from Yorktown. The English explorers Christopher Newport, John Smith and Robert Tyndall reached this spot in 1608, and the land was first called Tyndall's Point after one of them. Before the end of the 1600s the point had taken the name Gloucester.

The point sits downstream from Werowocomoco, which was the capital of the Powhatan Confederacy when the English arrived. Sarah Creek and part of Timberneck Creek cut into the land here, and water covers more than 40 percent of the community's area.

  • 4,000 acres in 1640On October 12, 1640, Argoll Yeardley received a patent for 4,000 acres on this side of the river, a tract known as Tyndall's Neck. In those years the York was still called the Charles River.
  • Marine science on the YorkGloucester Point is home to the Virginia Institute of Marine Science, a graduate school of the College of William & Mary where students study oceanography.
  • The bridge to YorktownU.S. Route 17 crosses the York on the George P. Coleman Memorial Bridge, linking Gloucester Point to Yorktown, where the American Revolution came to its end. The same road runs north 12 miles to Gloucester Courthouse, the county seat.
