About Zarephath, New Jersey
Zarephath is a community of 69 people in Franklin Township, Somerset County, on low ground between the Millstone River and the Delaware and Raritan Canal. The land was once Peter Workman Garretson's farm. His wife, Caroline Van Neste Field, became a follower of Alma Bridwell White, who had founded a church in Colorado in 1901, and Field gave the farm to that church. The church took on the farm's heavy mortgage and moved its headquarters here in 1908.
White named the place for the town in 1 Kings 17 where a widow fed the prophet Elijah, because she saw a likeness between that story and her church's move to a farm. Church members put up every building themselves, since the community prized self-reliance, and they farmed part of the 1,000-acre property. First called the Pentecostal Union, the church took the name Pillar of Fire in October 1917, and Zarephath became the worldwide home of its college and its radio station, WAWZ-FM.
“At this time, the doors were formally opened to all who wanted an education under Christian control, high school as well as elementary.”
- Fifty students in 1912The church opened the Zarephath Bible Institute in 1908 to prepare missionaries, preachers and teachers. On September 11, 1912, the Zarephath Academy followed with fifty students, five of them ready for high school work. On June 12, 1916, the church honored the school's first high school graduates, a class of four, in its Pillar of Fire Temple, and the state Board of Education accredited the school that November 14. It later took the name Alma Preparatory School.
- A college from 1921Informal college classes began here in 1917, and Alma White College received its charter in 1921. It ran until 1978. On March 23, 2001, the church founded Somerset Christian College, whose license let it award a two-year associate degree, with Biblical studies as the subject, and the school added a four-year degree in fall 2006.
- Floods on the MillstoneThe Millstone River runs along one edge of the campus, behind a twelve-foot levee. The levee did not keep out Tropical Storm Doria, which flooded the grounds in 1971, or Hurricane Floyd, which did the same in September 1999. Floyd crested more than three feet above any earlier record in the basin, left seven feet of water in the compound and caused about $2.5 million in damage.
- Irene closes the campusHurricane Irene wrecked much of the campus in late August 2011, and authorities ordered the grounds abandoned. The college, renamed Pillar College, moved to a new campus elsewhere in Somerset.
- The Davis Burial GroundOn Weston Canal Road beside the canal, the Davis Burial Ground holds about 100 graves, with perhaps 50 tombstones still standing. One marks Simeon Van Nortwick II, who lived from 1724 to 1813 and whose father came from Utrecht in the Netherlands.
