About Weston, New Jersey

On January 20, 1777, four hundred British troops came to Weston to seize flour stored in its mill. Their artillery blocked the bridge, so General Philemon Dickenson's men waded the river in waist deep water. The Americans routed the British, who lost thirty men to Dickenson's five. Washington praised the militia for their bravery.

Wilbur Smith owned the original Weston mill from 1925 until 1982. He spent years trying to save it, but that year it fell into the river. Before a group could salvage its parts, vandals burned what was left.

  • How the village got its nameWeston was once known as Van Nest's, and later as Frogtown. William T. Rodgers renamed the village Weston after he became owner of its mill.
