About Zephyr, Texas

Zephyr is a community of 179 people in southeastern Brown County, along U.S. Highway 84 about 12 miles east of Brownwood. The first settlers made their homes beside Blanket Creek in 1850. The Lazarus Vann family came in 1863, more families followed in the years after, and the first store opened in 1878.

The Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway completed its Brownwood to Lampasas line in 1885, but its tracks ran about a mile from Zephyr. Storekeeper J. M. Wilson responded by moving his store and the post office a mile west, to the spot where the town stands today. The following year Zephyr became a stop on the railroad.

“The town was supposedly named in 1850 by land surveyors who were trapped there by a blue norther. Their ironic name for the fierce wind stuck, and the town was named Zephyr.”
Handbook of Texas
  • The tornado of 1909An F4 tornado struck Zephyr on May 30, 1909. It left 34 people dead and 70 hurt, and most of those killed had lived on the south and east sides of town. It is still one of the deadliest tornadoes Texas has seen. Zephyr rebuilt and kept growing, reaching about 750 people by 1940.
  • Cotton and the boll weevilZephyr's economy rested on cotton until a boll weevil infestation and falling markets shut the town's last gin in the early 1940s. The population dropped below 300 in the 1960s. By 1989 Zephyr was a farming and ranching community with First Baptist, Methodist and Churches of Christ congregations.
  • Its own school district in 1958Zephyr's first school opened in 1876, and a new building put up in 1940 served until the end of the 1980s. In 1958 voters made Zephyr an independent school district so its few students would not have to ride a bus to a school in another town. Its one campus still holds elementary, junior high and high school grades.
