About Zurich, Montana

Zurich is an unincorporated community of 29 people in Blaine County, on Montana's Hi-Line along U.S. Route 2 between Harlem and Chinook, with the Milk River running south of town. Around 1887, Great Northern Railway officials gave a siding on their main line the name Zurich, after the city in Switzerland, but years passed before a town grew up beside it.

Rancher John Acher opened the first post office in 1907, about 4 miles east of where the town stands today. In 1913 Charles Grass laid out a townsite next to the railroad and started a general mercantile there. The new settlement grew quickly enough that by 1915 Zurich had 40 residents.

  • One chapel, many faithsIn 1916 the people of Zurich built a tiny chapel of their own. Because the town was too small for a church of each kind, the building was shared by Methodists, Mormons and Lutherans, and the American Sunday School Union held classes there too.
  • A school through 8th gradeZurich keeps its own elementary school district. The Zurich school teaches children from kindergarten through 8th grade, and older students go on to high school in Chinook.
  • The railroad still runs throughThe town began as a Great Northern siding, and trains still pass on the same line, now BNSF track. Amtrak's Empire Builder, running between Chicago and Seattle or Portland, goes through Zurich without stopping. Riders board in Havre, 31 miles to the west.
