About Aasu, American Samoa

In 1787, two French ships reached the bay at Aasu. Their crews were the first Europeans on record to set foot in the Samoan Islands. A clash on the beach killed French sailors and 39 Samoans, so the bay is still called Massacre Bay. France built a monument there in 1883, and the village keeps it up.

The name Aasu means smoke in the Samoan language. Its people later chose to move the village up into the mountains along a newly built road. The new mountain village took over the old name. The original shore settlement became a seasonal fishing camp, and taro is still grown there.
