About Fagasa, American Samoa
On December 10, 1787, part of a French expedition led by Laperouse came ashore at Fagasa. It was the first recorded European landing on Tutuila. The villagers greeted the visitors peacefully and let them trade for supplies. The French got fruit, more than 500 pigs and chickens, and drew fresh water from two streams.
In March 1991, an ancient adze quarry came to light at Fagasa. It may have been a major stone tool workshop for the region. Its tools may have served islands as far away as the Marquesas.
- What the village name meansThe name Fagasa translates to Sacred Bay. One of its two sub-villages is Fagatele, which means Great Bay.
