About Akins, Oklahoma
Sequoyah's Cabin Museum preserves the 1829 cabin where Sequoyah actually lived. The Cherokee Nation keeps it furnished to appear as it did in his day, in a 10-acre park, and it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Sequoyah invented the written form of the Cherokee language. In 1842, at about 80 years old, he left his family and home to search for Cherokees in Mexico, and he died on that journey.
