About Akron, Ohio
Akron is a city of 190,469 people and the seat of Summit County, on the Little Cuyahoga River. Major Miner Spicer of Groton, Connecticut, built a log cabin in the forest here in 1810, and in 1811 his family arrived by ox team with Paul Williams. Williams urged General Simon Perkins, surveyor for the Connecticut Land Company, to start a town at the highest point of the planned Ohio and Erie Canal. They laid it out in December 1825 and named it Akron, after a Greek word for summit.
Irish laborers digging the canal put up about 100 cabins nearby. In 1833 Eliakim Crosby founded a second village to the north, North Akron, also called Cascade, so the first town was called South Akron until the two merged and incorporated as one village in 1836. Summit County was formed in 1840, and a year later Akron took the county seat from Cuyahoga Falls. Akron became a city in 1865.
- The school law of 1847The Akron School Law of 1847 set up the city's public schools and organized them into grades from kindergarten through 12th grade, the K-12 system that every U.S. state now uses. Akron's first school still stands on Broadway Street near Exchange, and it is now a museum.
- Sojourner Truth in 1851When the Ohio Women's Rights Convention met in Akron in 1851, Sojourner Truth rose at the Universalist Old Stone Church and spoke without a prepared text. Her speech became known as "Ain't I A Woman?" John R. Buchtel, a local businessman tied to the same church, founded Buchtel College in 1870, and it became the University of Akron in 1913.
- Oats for the Union ArmyFerdinand Schumacher bought a mill in Akron in 1856. During the Civil War he turned out oat bars in large numbers to feed Union soldiers, and they kept selling well once the war was over.
- Rubber Capital of the WorldB.F. Goodrich came in 1869, Goodyear in 1898, Firestone in 1900 and General Tire in 1915, and all four made Akron their headquarters. Between 1910 and 1920 the population grew 201.8%, faster than any other American city. To house the crowds of workers, Frank A. Seiberling built Goodyear Heights and Harvey S. Firestone built Firestone Park. In 1936 about 5,000 strikers held a five-week sit-down strike that won recognition for the United Rubber Workers.
- Airships for the NavyGoodyear's subsidiary, the Goodyear-Zeppelin Company, built two giant airships for the U.S. Navy in Akron, the USS Akron in 1929 and the USS Macon in 1931. Goodyear went on to build blimps for the Navy during World War II and later flew them as advertising.
