About Portage Lakes, Ohio
Portage Lakes is a census-designated place in Summit County and part of Coventry Township. Directly south of Akron, it belongs to the Akron metropolitan area and takes its name from the surrounding lakes. The 2020 census recorded 6,407 residents.
- Land and WaterThe community covers 8.2 square miles, including 6.6 square miles of land and 1.6 square miles of water.
- Lakeside RecreationPortage Lakes State Park offers boat ramps and seasonal beach swimming.
- Changing BoundariesAfter Franklin Township merged into New Franklin in 2005, the census-designated place consisted only of unincorporated territory in Coventry Township.
- Early County TiesIn 1788, Coventry Township was originally within Washington County, the first county established in the Ohio Territory.
