About Green, Ohio
Green is a city of 27,475 people in southeastern Summit County, between Akron and Canton. It began in 1809 as Green Township, part of Stark County, and it moved into Summit County when that county was formed in 1840. The township held several small hamlets, Greensburg the best known among them, and by 1900 there were five, set among farm fields and coal lands.
Over time, business and manufacturing took the place of farming. By 1950 farmers had started selling their land to developers who built houses, and all that growth led residents to talk about becoming a city. Early in 1991 the township was incorporated as the Village of Green, after voters agreed to join the village with the rest of the township, and in 1992 Green became a city, with John Torok as its first mayor.
- 176 men in the Civil WarIn the early years of settlement, Peter Buchtel, John Dixon and the Keplers, John and Andrew, left Green to fight in the War of 1812. During the Civil War the township sent 176 men, and 26 of them became casualties. Several were relatives of Green's founders, among them Isaac and William Weaver, Joel Franks, William Hartong and John W. Steese.
- A pipeline fight in 2016In 2016 the city went to court against the NEXUS Pipeline, whose route passes close to homes, endangered wetlands and the Comet Lake Dam. The case ended with a $7.5 million settlement paid to the city, and building on the pipeline started in 2018.
- Boettler ParkThe land for Boettler Park once belonged to a wealthy industrialist, and it was later given to the city for public recreation. Today the 26-acre park has trails, and people come to fish, hike, picnic and bike there. Green is also home to Singer Lake Bog, a nature preserve.
- Eleven roundaboutsGreen opened Summit County's first two-lane roundabout in 2009. The city kept building them, and by 2024 it had 11 roundabouts.
